Ignorance is bliss I've heard. I had no idea how true this statement was until I sat down last night with my brother and his coworker and listened to them talk of all the corrupt things happening in the health care industry.
Both Emergency Medical Servicemen who expressed concerns about the lack of emphasis on patient care and the control that insurance companies have over the paychecks of doctors and nurses.
They spoke of several incidents/calls that bothered them greatly. I asked if it was because the patient died. The expressions I got back were not just because the patient had most certainly died but because it was preventable.
There is a greed among doctors to keep patients with certain insurance companies as their patients and to send them to certain hospitals and medical facilities for maximum money. Most every incident involved doctors and nurses not wanting to call 911 in order to get higher level of care for a serious or critical patient. I asked why of course. The answer was that if an emergency call is made and the patient is taken to the nearest hospital, then the patient may be assigned a new doctor upon discharge and may be released to a different care facility which means the money won't be coming back to the facility where the patient is currently at.
I literally felt sick to my stomach the more I listened to these stories where these helpless patients, the majority of them elderly, with chronic but manageable problems.
